CHOLESTEROL, HYPERTENSION UNCONTROLLED IN PEOPLE WITH DIABETES
Hypertension and cholesterol are not receiving proper clinical management
for most people with diabetes, according to studies reported at the recent
American Diabetes Association's (ADA's) Scientific Sessions.
Two reportsfrom different managed care plansshow that only
37% of people with diabetes achieve LDL cholesterol levels of 100 mg/dL or
less. One study was a review of 9,642 health maintenance organization
enrollees in Michigan, and the other was a review of 1.1 million members in a
southeastern United States managed care plan.
Although the surveys included large patient populations in different areas
of the country, both arrived at strikingly similar resultsnearly
two-thirds of patients with diabetes failed to meet goals for LDL cholesterol
recommended by the ADA.
A group of investigators from Washington University in St. Louis reported a
study of 10,043 participants in a free screening program for individuals 18
years or older with a personal or family history of diabetes, hypertension, or
kidney disease. Analysis revealed that nearly half48.7%of those
with diabetes, but no kidney disease, were found to have uncontrolled
hypertension.
