New Risk Factor for CVD in People with Diabetes
Researchers studying the link between diabetes and heart disease have foundanother indicator to help determine when a person with diabetes may bedeveloping cardiovascular disease. According to a recent study, high levels ofglycated LDL cholesterol represent a risk factor for the development ofatherosclerosis for people with diabetes.
The study, conducted by researchers at the Institute for Metabolic Researchat the University City Science Center in Philadelphia, found a positivecorrelation between glycated LDL and urinary albumin excretion, a knownpredictor for cardiovascular mortality. They also found a link betweenglycated LDL and elevated cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations, bothconsidered traditional indicators of an increased risk for cardiovasculardisease.
The researchers conclude that elevated levels of glycated LDL should beconsidered a risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis in people withdiabetes.
