Erectile Dysfunction a Marker for CAD
Erectile dysfunction (ED) may be an important marker to identify diabetic
patients with asymptomatic coronary artery disease (CAD), according to a new
report.
Carmine Gazzaruso, MD, and colleagues at Maugeri Foundation Hospital in
Pavia, Italy, evaluated the prevalence of ED in 133 men with uncomplicated
diabetes who had angiographically verified silent CAD and in 127 diabetic men
without evidence of myocardial ischemia.
Men with diabetes and silent CAD had nearly eight times the prevalence of
ED of those without silent CAD (33.8% versus 4.7%). The authors evaluated
several risk factorsincluding alipoprotein(a) polymorphism, smoking,
microalbuminuria, HDL, and LDLbut none were as efficient a predictor of
silent CAD as ED.
"If our findings are confirmed, ED may become a potential marker to
identify diabetic patients to screen for silent CAD," the authors
conclude.
