Diabetes and Congestive Heart Failure
People with type 2 diabetes are at greater risk for congestive heartfailure (CHF) than previously known, according to a recent report. Researchersconcluded a study to update previous estimates of congestive heart failureincidence rate in patients with type 2 diabetes when compared with an age- andsex-matched nondiabetic group.
Gregory A. Nichols, PhD, and colleagues at Kaiser Permanente Center forHealth Research in Portland, Ore., evaluated 8,231 people with type 2 diabetesand 8,845 nondiabetic patients of similar age and sex, none of whom hadcongestive heart failure as of January 1, 1997. The researchers followed thesepatients for 6 years to estimate the CHF incidence rate.
Patients with diabetes were more than twice as likely to develop CHF aspatients without diabetes (30.9 vs. 12.4 cases per 1,000 persons). Thedifference in CHF development rates between persons with and without diabeteswas much greater in younger age groups. Other predictors of CHF developmentwere poorer glucose control and greater body mass index. Risk for developingCHF was greatest in the younger diabetic group, leading researchers toconclude that younger patients may benefit most from risk factormodification.
