Metabolic Syndrome and Mortality
Metabolic syndrome significantly increases the risk of death from coronary
heart disease (CHD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), according to a new
study.
Researchers at Bristol-Myers Squibb and the University of California
collaborated to examine the impact of metabolic syndrome on CHD, CVD, and
overall mortality among U.S. adults. More than 6,200 subjects, 30 to 75 years
of age, were followed for an average of 13.3 years.
Patients with diabetes and CVD are at the highest risk of mortality. Those
with even one or two metabolic syndrome risk factors were twice as likely to
die from CHD and CVD. Metabolic syndrome more strongly predicts CHD, CVD, and
total mortality than its individual components. Results of the study revealed
that mortality risk from CHD and CVD is elevated in persons with metabolic
syndrome even without the presence of diabetes.
