Diabetes as Deadly as CHD
People with diabetes and no history of coronary heart disease (CHD) have as
much risk of vascular death (from heart attack or stroke) as those with CHD
alone, according to a report in the July issue of Diabetes Care.
Chris Isles, MD, of Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, Scotland, and
colleagues studied the risks of diabetes and CHD in a cohort of 7,052 men and
8,354 women age 4564 years. Participants were screened first in
19721976 and then again 25 years later.
Investigators found the highest mortality among people with both diabetes
and CHD, and the lowest mortality among people with neither. Participants with
diabetes or CHD were in an intermediate-risk group. Men with diabetes were
only 1.2 times more likely to have a vascular death than men with CHD. The
risk for women was much higher, almost double with diabetes than with CHD.
In short, the authors conclude that diabetes should be considered a risk
equivalent to CHD, particularly among women, and should be treated
aggressively by clinicians.
