CAD Linked to Impaired Glucose Tolerance
The link between type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease is wellrecognized, but less is known about disordered glucose metabolism innondiabetic people and the development of coronary artery disease (CAD).
Recent research suggests that abnormal glucose tolerance is common inpeople with CAD without a previous diagnosis ofdiabetes.
A group of researchers studied glucose metabolism and insulin response in144 patients with CAD without a previous diagnosis of diabetes. Only 40% ofpatients had normal glucose tolerance, with 39% of patients considered to haveimpaired glucose tolerance and 21% found to have diabetes. Post-challengehyperinsulinemia was linked to the number of diseased coronary arteries and ahistory of myocardial infarction.
