Metabolic Risks After Gastric Banding
Greater numbers of people are choosing gastric banding to help with weight
reduction, but comparatively little is known about how a person's metabolic
risk profile changes after the surgery. According to a group of researchers at
University of Innsbruck, Austria, women who overcome obesity with gastric
banding have a much better metabolic risk profile and greater insulin
sensitivity than women who lose weight by diet alone.
Monica Lechleitner, MD, and colleagues studied 24 women who underwent
Swedish adjustable gastric banding (SAGB) and 16 women who dieted. Researchers
measured clinical data including body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio,
body fat content, and a range of laboratory values.
Women who had SAGB lost significantly more weight and had lower measures of
insulin resistance, lower plasma leptin levels, and lower markers of
inflammation than dieters. "The extensive weight loss in formerly obese
women after [the] SAGB operation was paralleled by a favorable metabolic
profile indicating a higher degree of insulin sensitivity than in women after
a successful, but less pronounced, weight loss by diet alone,"
researchers conclude.
