The latest in high-tech and convenient devices
SideKick
The SideKick from Home Diagnostics offers an all-in-one blood glucose
testing system designed to be the smallest available. The device combines a
vial of 50 test strips with a glucose meter built into the top. The user
removes a test strip from beneath the monitor, inserts it into the meter on
the lid, and tests. The device requires a blood sample of about 1 ml from the
forearm or fingertip and should produce results in less than 10 seconds. After
the final test is completed, the entire unit is disposable. The SideKick has a
no-coding feature, which ensures accurate testing. Home Diagnostics, Inc.,
2400 NW 55th Ct., Fort Lauderdale, Fla. 33309. 1-888-777-7357.

HemoCue Urine Albumin
This point-of-care diagnostic system tests for kidney failure in people
with diabetes. Using 15 ml of urine, the HemoCue Urine Albumin system can
predict the likelihood of developing diabetic nephropathy and cardiovascular
disease based on the levels of the albumin protein in the body. The system
includes a portable analyzer and disposable microcuvettes, which contain
albumin antibodies. To test, draw a sample into the cuvette using capillary
action and place it in the analyzer. The device mixes it using vibration. The
reaction is complete in 90 seconds, enabling clinicians to administer advice
or treatment during the office visit. HemoCue, Inc., 40 Empire Dr., Lake
Forest, Calif. 92630. 1-800-323-1674.

GlucaGen HypoKit
The GlucaGen HypoKit from Novo Nordisk is a fully portable emergency kit to
treat severe hypoglycemic reactions in people with diabetes. For patients who
have insulin-dependent diabetes, the kit can be used wherever it is needed and
in any setting. It does not require refrigeration, and a hard shell protects
it when traveling. The HypoKit includes a pre-filled syringe with sterile
water for mixing and a vial of GlucaGen powder. A complete set of instructions
for the administrator is included, and the kit is safe for use with children.

Accu-Chek Smart Printer
The Accu-Chek Smart Printer offers a new way for physicians to receive and
print information about their patients' blood glucose levels, eliminating the
need for a computer. The system directly transfers data from Accu-Chek blood
glucose meters to the printer and offers six different optional reports to
help providers track and access information. Graphs and tabular data are
produced and saved within the printer. Printing the results in the office
allows clinicians to spend more time with patients during their visits.
Patients also can download data from their Accu-Chek meter to the Smart
Printer while waiting for their appointments. Roche Diagnostics, 9115 Hague
Rd., Indianapolis, Ind. 46256. 1-800-858-8072.

GlucoMessenger
The GlucoMessenger from Diabetech is a wireless device used to send data to
e-mail or cell phones as text messages in real time. Used mainly for children
with diabetes, the Messenger allows parents to stay connected to their
children and reduce dependence on school personnel. The small keyboard lets
users type in short codes to send their parents or caregivers information
about blood glucose, insulin, carbohydrates, and exercise. Likewise, parents
can remind their child to take his or her insulin or medication by e-mailing
the Messenger. Plans include 125 messages per month, and premium plans also
are available. The Messenger comes in red, blue, or aqua. Diabetech, LP, 2109
Main St., Dallas, Texas 75201. 1-877-MY-GLUCO (1-877-694-5826).

Sural Biosensor
NeuroMetrix offers an additional test to its line of NC-stat System
products, designed to perform noninvasive nerve testing. The newest device,
the Sural Biosensor, tests the sural nerve in the lower leg and helps to
assist the early diagnosis of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The test is
equipped with an embedded chip that monitors skin surface temperature. The
chip also has a unique serial number, so a patient's information and test
results stay connected. Other tests within the NC-stat System include
peroneal, tibial, median, and ulnar nerve sensors. NeuroMetrix, Inc., 62
Fourth Ave., Waltham, Mass. 02451. 1-888-786-7287.
