Metabolic Syndrome Linked to Increased Mortality in Older Females With Diabetes
A group of investigators writing in Diabetes Care says that
metabolic syndromea cluster of symptoms including a large waist size,
insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemiaincreases the risk of
cardiovascular mortality in older women with diabetes.
The group prospectively studied the link between cardiovascular risk and
metabolic syndrome in 9,677 women who participated in the Study of
Osteoporotic Fractures project. Participants were 65 years of age or older
when recruited during 19861988. Each participant had height and weight
measured as well as fasting lipids, and they had tests for insulin and glucose
function. Cause of death was determined by medical records and death
certificates.
About half the women with diabetes were found to have metabolic syndrome.
Among older women with diabetes, the presence of metabolic syndrome increased
the risk of death from cardiovascular or coronary heart disease by two- to
threefold, and presented a greater risk than any individual components.
