The latest in high-tech and convenient devices

Medtronic Guardian RT

The Guardian RT system from Medtronic has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration and will be available in select cities this fall. The device is designed to provide real-time continuous blood glucose monitoring and improve diabetes management. The Guardian RT displays glucose values every 5 minutes and uses an alarm to alert patients when glucose levels become too high or low. Over a 3-day period, the device can record and store up to 864 glucose readings. The Guardian has three integral parts: a disposable glucose sensor inserted subcutaneously, a transmitter, and a monitor. The sensor measures the amount of blood glucose and then connects to the transmitter, which communicates to the monitor. The monitor will display glucose values on a computer screen. With a docking station, clinicians can download data and personal information to the computer. A fingerstick measurement is needed to calibrate the system every 12 hours and before adjusting insulin doses. The transmitter and sensor are waterproof, enabling users to shower, bathe, or swim without removing the device. Vital Vision MS-1200

The Vital Vision MS-1200 from BioTex Labs offers people with diabetes a way to measure arterial stiffness, blood pressure, and pulse rate simultaneously. The user wraps a cuff around the upper arm and presses the start button, and the device records readings automatically. The Vital Vision displays results on a large LCD screen. If one to three bars appear on the screen, the cardiovascular system is normal. Seven to eight bars indicate cases of arterial stiffness, diabetes, obesity, and high stress. The device also records 30 sets of values, including date and time for proper health management. BioTex Labs, 11118 Watt Circle, San Antonio, Texas 78233. 877-258-5092. www.biotexlabs.com

The system mounts to the shower wall for proper draining and has an anti-mildew retrieval rope to lift it from the shower floor to the wall. The FootWork Corporation, P.O. This device is compatible with other data management systems and can be integrated into hospital or office software. It can store up to 2,500 patient tests and automatically upload data from a computer. The ergonomic design allows for easy one-handed use for medical professionals.
