At their recent Scientific Assembly and Exposition, held September28October 1 in San Francisco, the American Academy of Family Physicians(AAFP) unveiled a resource kit to help providers encourage physical fitnessand other healthful lifestyle changes in the primary care setting.
A key component of AAFP's Americans in Motion (AIM) initiative, the AIM toChange Toolkit contains a variety of materials to help providers open adialogue with patients about physical fitness.
Begun in 2002, AIM seeks to improve the health of Americans andfamily physiciansthrough physical activity, nutrition, and emotionalwell-being (DOC News, February 2005).
Each AIM to Change Toolkit contains a primer that describes effectiveapproaches for physicians, fitness posters for the office, body mass index(BMI) calculators, a fitness prescription pad, and a CD so additionalresources can be printed as needed. For patients, the kit contains a personalassessment tool, food and activity journals, and health guide flashcards.
Sarah A. McMullen, MEd, AIM national manager, says the toolkit wasdeveloped because family physicians often lack the skills to broach thesubject of fitness and obesity during office visits (DOC News,November 2005).
"There's a huge amount of data out there showing that doctors aren'ttalking about obesity," McMullen says. "Residents don't gettraining in fitness, nutrition, and wellness. And these kinds of visits aren'tusually reimbursed."

AAFP offers the AIM to Change Toolkit at no cost, though there is a$3.95 shipping fee per kit.
