Dental Device Reduces Food Intake
A dental device worn inside the mouth may help reduce food intake by
limiting the size of bites people are able to take while eating, according to
a group of researchers at Louisiana State University. The device is a tool
that fits on the upper palate, reducing the bite size.
The device was tested on 32 subjects, half of whom were randomized to wear
the device while eating a standardized test meal of mixed foods during the
1-day study. Those who wore the device reduced their intake of grams of food
by 25.85%, amounting to 659 kcal on the test day, while those in the control
group reduced their intake by 3%, or 125 kcal. Subjects report that the device
is easy to wear and use, although it may interfere with speech for many
people.
