Lack of Sleep Linked to Obesity
Lisa Esposito
People who sleep less are more likely to become obese, according to a studypresented at the 2004 National American Association for the Study of Obesity(NAASO) Annual Meeting held November 1418 in LasVegas.
Columbia University researchers, analyzing data from the National Healthand Nutrition Examination Survey 1 (NHANES-1), found that subjects between theages of 32 and 59 who slept 4 hours or fewer were 73% more likely to be obesethan subjects who slept between 7 and 9 hours nightly.
Lead researcher James Gangwisch, a post-doctoral fellow in psychiatricepidemiology, attributes the results to a possible decrease in the hormoneleptin and increase in grehlin, caused by sleep deprivation and leading to arise in appetite and food consumption.
