The latest in high-tech and convenient devices

American Medical ID

Medical identification bracelets or necklaces no longer have to be the plain, steel ID tags that were long the only alternative. American Medical ID offers a broad line of medical-alert ID jewelry. The newest offerings are the charm bracelet, the charm necklace, and dog tag–style jewelry. In a medical emergency, the IDs allow medics or other medical professionals to give prompt, precise treatment. Universal acceptance makes wearing a medical-alert ID an excellent form of preventive medicine. High-grade metals are used for engraving surfaces, including solid stainless steel, sterling silver, 10-karat gold-filled, and 10-karat and 14-karat gold. American Medical ID, P.O. Box 925617, Houston, Texas 77292-5617. 1-800-363-5985. www.americanmedical-id.com

The new Animas IR 1250 insulin infusion pump has a food database of up to 500 items that can be customized to ease carbohydrate counting and allow for more precise insulin dosing. The pump looks and sounds like a small cell phone—patients can choose customized audio alerts (of their own composition or downloaded popular songs) and program tips to help control diabetes. Like earlier generations of Animas pumps, the IR 1250 is waterproof and easy to use, with a long battery life. The system tracks weight-loss progress over time, with reports of daily energy balance, nutritional intake, physical activity, and detailed food logs. Patients gain a better understanding of the effect lifestyle has on weight loss, and health care professionals have an easy-to-use tool that helps with motivation and coaching.
