The latest in high-tech and convenient devices

BIOSAFE Blood Collection Kit

BIOSAFE Medical Technologies has made a nearly painless, quick, and easy way for people with diabetes to test their blood. The blood collection kit includes three different tests: the hemoglobin A1c, the cholesterol panel, and the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) test. Send the sample collection card to BIOSAFE with a few drops of blood and its lab will analyze the tests and return a detailed, easy-to-read report of your results. The hemoglobin A1c will compare past glycated hemoglobin (A1C) test results to determine if any progress has been made toward proper diabetes management, while the cholesterol panel will measure your blood for HDL and LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The TSH test aids in the detection of either an underactive or over-active thyroid. BIOSAFE Medical Technologies, Inc., 100 Field Dr., Suite 200, Lake Forest, Ill. 60045. 1-800-768-8446. www.ebiosafe.com,,

Digiscope

The Digiscope device from EyeTel Imaging, Inc. offers physicians an efficient way of detecting the early-stages of diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of blindness in adults with diabetes. Digiscope is designed for easy use by primary care physicians and nurses. It captures digital images of the retina and sends those pictures to the Wilmer-EyeTel Reading Center for analysis. The physician will get the patient's results within 48 hours, allowing doctors to quickly notify patients with identifiable symptoms. In the future, Digiscope may also help diagnose other eye disorders such as age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma. EyeTel Imaging, Inc., 9130 Guilford Road, Columbia, Md. 21046. 301-483-6167.

MedicAlert's Personal HealthKey

When emergency strikes, medical professionals need an easy and fast way to get information. The Medic-Alert Personal HealthKey is designed for that very purpose and allows patients to carry their complete personal health record at all times. It plugs into any computer USB port, providing access to specific health reports or your patient's entire medical history, including images. It also will track medications, send and receive automatic reminders, track fitness goals, and graph lab values for analysis. The user can also decide which information should be shared through use of a password and encrypted data. MedicAlert Foundation International, 2323 Colorado Ave., Turlock, Calif. 95382. 1-888-433-2469. www.medicalert.com

Medicool Count-A-Dose

The Count-A-Dose is designed to eliminate the guesswork from accurate insulin dosing, especially for blind or visually impaired people with diabetes. To ensure an accurate dose, the syringe-filling tool makes a distinct audible and tangible click as each unit of insulin goes into the device. It even allows the user to mix two kinds of insulin, providing easy and safe insulin dosage. For use with the BD U100 50 unit (1/2cc) syringe only. Medicool, Inc., 20460 Gramercy Pl., Torrance, Calif. 90501. 1-800-433-2469. www.medicool.com

CAOL+GLU test strips

Polymer Technology Systems, Inc. has developed a new way for physicians to analyze glucose and cholesterol simultaneously using only one test strip. While it does take longer —2 minutes—to complete the test, it requires a significantly smaller amount of blood and provides physicians a more accurate and precise measurement to determine blood glucose and cholesterol levels. The strips are only compatible with Polymer's CardioCheck P.A. system, specifically designed for physician use. Polymer Technology Systems, Inc., 7736 Zionsville Rd., Indianapolis, Ind. 46268. 1-877-870-5610. www.ptspanels.com

Glutose 15

Orange juice, candy, or milk may not be enough to treat an insulin reaction. With its 15 grams of pure glucose, this oral gel raises blood glucose levels to speed up recovery. The gel tube eliminates counting or measuring and it is easy to open in emergencies. Each packet includes three doses. Paddock Laboratories, Inc., 3940 Quebec Ave. North, Minneapolis, Minn. 55427. 1-800-328-5113. www.paddocklabs.com
