The latest in high-tech and convenient devices

Xilas TempTouch

TempTouch is a personal dermal thermometer designed to detect foot ulcers before they break the surface of the skin. It is particularly useful for people with diabetes who have been diagnosed with neuropathy and are at high risk of developing foot ulcers. The TempTouch device is not invasive or painful to use. Touch the infrared sensor tip to specific points on the feet and record the temperature. If one site is >4° different than normal, it could indicate a possible ulcer. Steps can be taken to avoid the ulcer and reduce the risk of further problems such as infection, gangrene, and amputation. The device is battery operated and should last for 6 months if used every day. Xilas Medical, Inc., 12665 Silicon Dr., San Antonio, Texas 78249. 210-692-1114. www.xilas.com

OmniPod Insulin Management System

Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in January, the OmniPod will be available in select areas later this year. Unlike traditional insulin pumps, the OmniPod eliminates the need for excessive tubing or painful needles. It uses continuous insulin infusion under the skin with multiple basal rates and bolus options, suggested bolus calculations, safety checks, and alarm features. Two components comprise the system—the OmniPod and the Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM). The pod is a small device worn on the skin that combines an integrated infusion set, automatic inserter, and insulin reservoir. It delivers insulin based on wireless instructions from the PDM, a handheld device used to program and monitor the OmniPod's insulin delivery and to check blood glucose levels with test strips. The OmniPod can be worn discreetly and the PDM can be carried in a backpack or purse. Insulet Corporation, 9 Oak Park Dr., Bedford, Mass. 01730. 1-800-591-3455. www.MyOmniPod.com

Accu-Chek Aviva Meter System

The new Aviva blood glucose monitoring system is designed to help people with diabetes more easily detect and prevent unreliable test results. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in May and will be available for sale later this year. The device uses a unique wide-mouth test strip that pulls a tiny drop of blood into the meter like a magnet. The dosing area is twice the size of traditional strips. Users will have the choice of multiple test sites, including the finger, palm, forearm, calf, and thigh. The meter also has hypoglycemia notices, and as many as four test reminders can be set each day. Roche Diagnostics, 9115 Hague Rd., Indianapolis, Ind. 46256. 317-521-7159. www.roche-diagnostics.com

Accu-Chek Multiclix Lancet

The Accu-Chek Multiclix lancet device is a unique, preloaded drum with six lancets that eliminates the need to carry or handle individual needles for each test. The special design also stops any side-to-side lancet motion, which reduces skin tearing. Multiclix has 11 depth settings to help avoid nerves. The drum can be disposed of easily in ordinary waste bins. Roche Diagnostics, 9115 Hague Rd., Indianapolis, Ind. 46256. 317-521-7159. www.roche-diagnostics.com

BalanceLog Software

The BalanceLog makes it easy to monitor one's eating habits and determine individual nutritional needs. It tracks the amount of food and exercise a person receives, as well as protein, carbohydrates, fat, cholesterol, and fiber. The program allows a patient to design a specific eating plan or diet from favorite foods. It incorporates more than 4,000 different meals, even from brand names or national restaurant chain menus. A user also can choose from more than 300 exercise programs. The BalanceLog is compatible with Windows PCs, Palm OS PDAs, and the Internet. MedGem Indirect Calorimeter

By measuring overall oxygen consumption (VO2), the MedGem Indirect Calorimeter determines a patient's resting metabolic rate (RMR), which accounts for up to 75% of the total calories he or she needs each day. The MedGem is a 5-oz portable tool, easily used in health care settings such as inpatient and outpatient weight-management programs, physician offices, long-term care, home care, rehabilitation centers, bariatric clinics, and endocrinology clinics. By balancing calories "in" with calories "out," persons with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, or obesity can more accurately manage their weight and nutrition. The MedGem comes with single-use breathing attachments to make cleanup easy. HealtheTech, Inc., 523 Park Point Dr., 3rd Floor, Golden, Colo. 80401. 303-526-5085. www.healthetech.com {blacksquare}
