The latest in high-tech and convenient devices

SonoPrep Ultrasonic Skin Permeation System

The SonoPrep Ultrasonic system from Sontra Medical helps reduce and manage the pain associated with needle sticks and other diabetes-related issues. By making the skin more permeable, it enhances the effectiveness of topical anesthetics and may enable clinicians to reduce the anxiety of patients with a low tolerance for needle sticks. A clinician or the patient can administer the skin permeation treatment. The SonoPrep device applies relatively low frequency ultrasonic energy to the skin for an average of 15 seconds. The treatment shortens the effective onset of topical anesthetics from as long as 60 minutes to 5 minutes, giving people with diabetes accelerated pain relief. Sontra Medical Corporation, 10 Forge Pkwy., Franklin, Mass. 02038. 1-877-476-6872, ext. 273. www.sontra.com

OptiClik

The OptiClik is a reusable insulin pen that precisely controls the injection of 24-hour basal insulin glargine (Lantus, Sanofi-Aventis) for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The pen uses special cartridges that contain about 300 units of Lantus each and are available at most drugstores. A digital dose display shows the number of units remaining. To operate the pen, the patient attaches a disposable BD needle, enters the amount of insulin needed by turning a dial with audible clicks, and presses the inject button. Two types of needles—one that screws on and another type that pushes on—are available in different lengths and gauges from BD Consumer Healthcare. Both needle types can be used with the device. The OptiClik battery should last 3 years. The device is portable and does not require refrigeration for short periods. When used with Cholestech's LDX System, the test can measure a patient's hs-CRP with just a simple finger prick. The test assists with early diagnosis of a patient's risk for heart disease and can be performed in time to include on-site counseling during the same office visit.
