Dairy Reduces Diabetes Risk
Ahigher dairy intake, particularly of the low-fat variety, may reduce the
risk of diabetes in men, according to recent research by investigators at
Harvard University and Brigham and Women's Hospital in
Boston.
The study included 41,254 participants in the Health Professionals
Follow-up Study, a long-term project of male physicians, dentists, and other
health professionals. Each participant completed a dietary survey that
solicited detailed information about the type and quantity of food eaten.
During 12 years of follow-up, researchers found 1,243 new cases of type 2
diabetes. When other factors were controlled for, men who consumed the most
dairy products had about 23% lower risk of diabetes than those who ate the
least. For every additional daily serving of dairy products, a person gains a
9% lower risk of diabetes, they concluded.
