The latest in high-tech and convenient devices
Unistik 3
The next generation of Unistik 3 from Owen Mumford is a unique, preset
lancing device that does not require any cocking procedure. Twist off the cap
and it is ready to use. The device also has a visual lockout feature that will
alert the user if reuse is attempted. Indentations and a side release button
are designed to help prevent misfires while removing the lancet cap. The
newest Unistik also offers reduced puncture depths, providing increased
comfort and blood flow. Owen Mumford Inc., 1755 West Oak Commons Ct.,
Marietta, Ga. 30062. 1-800-421-6936.

Rightest GM300
The new BioNime blood glucose monitoring system is designed to prevent
contamination of the blood sample with a unique safety-keep system and
enlarged test strips with a special hand bar. The meter requires a small blood
sample and will process results in 8 seconds. The GM300 also features a large
display, 100-test memory with date and time, and data upload capability with
Rightest software. BioNime Corp., 694 Renhua Rd., Dali City, Taiwan.

FreeStyle Freedom
Next in the FreeStyle blood glucose monitoring line, the Freedom has been
approved by the Food and Drug Administration and should be available this
month. Employing the same technology as other FreeStyle systems, the Freedom
measures glucose in a small, 0.3-ml blood sample and can be used anywhere on
the body for testing flexibility. The device's test strip is faster than other
models, producing results in just 5 seconds. A high-contrast display is large
enough to be read by people who have vision problems, and the buttons also are
large and easy to distinguish. The FreeStyle Freedom is the same size as the
older meters, but has a new ergonomic design and also includes four
programmable alarms. Abbott Laboratories, 1420 Harbor Bay Pkwy., Alameda,
Calif. 94502. 510-749-5449.

The Diet Plate
The Diet Plate is designed to help people with diabetes lose weight and
control their food portions. The plate is calibrated to give measured
quantities of carbohydrates, proteins, and cheeses and sauces, leaving the
remainder of the plate for vegetables. A separate style designed for men
allows for 500 extra calories, and bowls and a children's design also are
available. With the bowl, you can match your choice of cereal to the color
band suggested on the bowl. The child's plate allows parents who are
monitoring their kids' weight to educate them about healthy eating. The word
"diet" is not printed on the plate, so children may remain unaware
that they are on a weight-loss program. The Diet Plate Ltd., Glossop Brook
Business Park, Surrey St., Glossop, Derbyshire, U.K. 44 (0) 1457-862-446.

Brevio NCS-Monitor
NeuMed's newest version of the Brevio NCS-Monitor system tests for diabetic
neuropathy with a smaller design. It calculates latency and amplitude for
sensory, motor, and f-wave responses using a single noninvasive neuro-sensor
for all tests on a patient. Unlike older models, the fourth-generation device
eliminates the need for a separate computer. When a patient is screened, the
results are immediately sent to a printer in the office or through a Web
service for an electronic report. Results are securely contained within the
system. In addition to diabetes testing, the handheld, battery-operated Brevio
can be used to evaluate symptoms for carpal tunnel and other peripheral
neuropathies. NeuMed, Inc., 800 Silvia St., West Trenton, N.J. 08628.

Cleo 90
The Cleo 90 infusion set is a single-use, disposable device from Smiths
Medical. The unique all-in-one design holds both a cannula inserter and needle
retractor so users will have complete control over the insertion. It does not
require a separate inserter. The automatic retractor pulls the needle into the
device after insertion to prevent accidental needle sticks. For those patients
who are timid about needles, the needle is hidden so they won't even see it.
The Cleo 90 has a Flex-Attach system to allow for 360-degree rotation at the
site. The connection is standard so it will fit with any open insulin pump.
The Cleo 90 has a transparent adhesive, and a user will not have to wear any
uncomfortable tape or dressings to hold it in place. Smiths Medical MD, Inc.,
265 Grey Fox Rd., St. Paul, Minn. 55112. 1-800-209-2145.

SphygmoCor
The noninvasive SphygmoCor System from AtCor Medical helps clinicians get a
closer look at a patient's cardiovascular condition in a clinic or office
setting. It takes a 10-second snapshot of the radial arterial pressure wave
and derives the ascending aortic pressure wave, providing key cardiovascular
measurements useful for managing patients with hypertension, diabetes,
diastolic heart failure, and other highcardiovascular risk conditions
such as renal disease and hypercholesterolemia. The clinical patient report
includes the average central aortic waveform, important pressure measurements,
and three key central parameters, with graphs representing normal ranges. The
results can be used to tailor individual drug therapies and monitor the
effects of treatment. Tests for pulse wave, pulse wave velocity, aortic blood
pressure, and heart rate variability are available. AtCor Medical, Inc., 3333
Warrenville Rd., Lisle, Ill. 60532. 1-800-595-7188.

SimpleChoice Twist
The Twist from SimpleChoice is a unique infusion set, designed to make
insulin transference convenient and comfortable for people with diabetes. The
device has a straight, 90-degree insertion angle, different than many other
sets that may require a difficult or painful entry position. Able to rotate
360 degrees at the site, the device can move naturally with the patient's
body. The Twist is compatible with most major pump brands and comes in two
catheter lengths, 5 mm and 9 mm. SimpleChoice, 4955 Avalon Ridge Pkwy.,
Norcross, Ga. 30071. 1-877-773-2879.
