Gastric Banding Reduces Diabetes and Hypertension
Laparoscopic gastric banding can prevent the development of type 2 diabetes
and hypertension in obese people, according to a report in the November 2005
issue of Diabetes Care. The researchers wrote of their experience
with laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) on 73 patients with an
average body mass index (BMI) of 45.7. A control group consisted of 49
subjects who refused LAGB surgery but agreed to be followed.
At the end of a 4-year follow-up period, aside from weight loss and
decreased BMI among those receiving LAGB, researchers noted that five of the
no-LAGB group progressed to type 2 diabetes while none in the LAGB group did.
In the no-LAGB group, one person's diabetes was resolved, while the disease
remitted in seven of those receiving LAGB.
Hypertension developed in 11 of the no-LAGB patients and in 1 of those who
received gastric banding, while the condition improved in 1 no-LAGB patient
and in 11 of those who underwent LAGB.
"In morbid obesity, sustained and long-lasting weight loss obtained
through LAGB prevents the occurrence of type 2 diabetes and hypertension and
decreases the prevalence of these disorders," researchers conclude.
