Older Adult Mental Impairment Linked to Poor Glucose Control
Older adults with type 2 diabetes have a high risk of mental health issues
that may contribute to poor glycemic control, according to a report in the
August issue of Diabetes
Care.
A group of investigators evaluated 60 patients >70 years of age in order
to identify barriers to effective diabetes management. The participants were
an average of 79 years of age and had diabetes for an average of 14 years.
Overall, the group was found to have a high incidence of undiagnosed cognitive
dysfunction, depression, and functional disabilities.
Cognitive dysfunction in particular was associated with poor glycemic
control, as measured by glycated hemoglobin (A1C). Providers should screen
older patients for cognitive impairment that could affect the management of
their illness.
