The latest in high-tech and convenient devices

Autolet Impression

The Autolet Impression from Owen Mumford is an advanced lancing device for finger and alternative site testing. The device is designed with Comfort Zone Technology. When it is pressed against the finger, a series of eight raised impression dots stimulates large nerve fibers in the finger, preventing the pricking sensation when obtaining a drop of blood. A force adjustment feature allows users to control the lancet force when sampling. The device also offers seven penetration-depth settings, based on user preference and skin type. For alternative site testing such as on the forearm, the Autolet is equipped with a clear end cap for control. SilverKnit Sock

Figure 1

The SilverKnit Sock from Medicool is useful for anyone with diabetes who experiences foot complications. The silver fiber in the sock inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi. It also helps regulate the temperature throughout the sock, allowing the feet to stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The sock is made with Teflon, which is designed to reinforce the toe and heel while preventing friction. A Coolmax fiber also keeps moisture off the skin, and "no-seam" sewing provides foot comfort. The design keeps the top of the sock from falling down or sagging around the ankle but is loose enough to prevent binding or marks on the legs. This software also contains tools to calculate required calories, protein, and fluid. It generates a body mass index (BMI) and ideal body weight in one screening. The Toolbox features an enhanced carbohydrate counter as well as dietary reference guides. The software is compatible with PDA devices that operate on WindowsOS, PalmOS, and desktop or tablet PCs. RxWise

Figure 4

The RxWise device offers people with diabetes a safety check system to help avoid potentially dangerous adverse drug reactions. The user records his or her medical information with the software to create a history of specific drugs taken and known medical conditions, as well as any drug allergies. Once the information is entered into the device, potential risks about medications that might cause an adverse reaction are displayed immediately. If desired, the user can then forward the warnings and information to his or her physician or pharmacist. RxWise covers prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications. It is available as a USB Flash Drive or in an online version. Iatrogen, LLC, 12801 World Gate Dr., Herndon, Va. 20170. 571-203-7252. www.rxwise.com

ImpDF50

Figure 5

The ImpDF50 from ImpediMed delivers advanced technology for point-of-care bioimpedance testing of body composition. Using three algorithms—general, obese, and child—depending on the type of test needed, the device measures the body's percentages of fat-free mass, fat mass, total body water, and cellular water based on resistance of a painless current. Electrodes are attached to the patient's feet and hands while a low-level electric current passes through the body in 2–3 minutes. The device is handheld, battery operated, and fully portable. ImpediMed Limited, ABN 65 089 705 144, 4B/2404 Logan Rd., Eight Mile Plains QLD 4113, Australia. +61 7 3423 1777. www.impedimed.com
