Once-Daily Dose Improves Compliance
Compliance with diabetes drug therapy is much higher among patients taking
a once-daily formulation of sulfonylureas, according to a study reported in
the December 2005 issue of Diabetes, Obesity, and
Metabolism.
The project included 105 patients with type 2 diabetes, 4075 years
of age, who had taken a sulfonylurea drug.
Participants were randomized to receive twice-daily doses of glibenclamide,
while the rest took a once-daily dose of sustained-release gliclazide. They
took the drug for 16 weeks, using a special tablet bottle equipped with a
microprocessor to keep track of the date and time when medication is
taken.
People prescribed the once-daily drug complied much more often, took the
correct number of doses on more days, and missed doses less often than those
on the twice-daily regimen. Those who took the once-daily drug also had better
blood glucose results and lower glycated hemoglobin (A1C).
