Insulin Improves Coronary Artery Blood Flow
Insulin improves myocardial perfusion in people with type 2 diabetes and
coronary artery disease (CAD), according to research reported in the February
issue of Diabetes.
Investigators in Finland studied the effect of insulin on myocardial blood
flowas measured by single-photon emission-computed tomography
(SPECT)on 43 people with diabetes and CAD who were experiencing
ischemia.
While patients were at rest, insulin increased myocardial blood flow by 13%
in ischemic regions of the heart and 22% in nonischemic regions.
"In addition to its metabolic effects, insulin infusion may improve
endovascular function and thus increase the threshold for ischemia and partly
contribute to the beneficial effects found in clinical trials in these
subjects," the researchers conclude.
