Better Mental Functioning Through Glycemic Control
Better glycemic control can help improve the mental deterioration that
often accompanies type 2 diabetes, according to a report in the February issue
of Diabetes Care.
A group of investigators studied intensive glycemic therapy in 145 older
adults with type 2 diabetes. Participants took metformin with an add-on of
rosiglitazone or glyburide. Cognitive functioning was tested at baseline and
after 24 weeks of therapy.
After treatment, both groups showed significant improvements in fasting
plasma glucose levelsand also working memory function. One cognitive
scale showed 2531% reduction in errors that correlated very highly with
improved glycemic control. The underlying mechanism is not well understood,
and it isn't known whether the effects are long-lasting or also are seen in
more severe forms of mental impairment.
