Kids With Metabolic Syndrome Have Greater Carotid Stiffness
Obese children with so-called metabolic syndromea cluster ofsymptoms that includes a large waist size, hypertension, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemiashow signs that serious vascular processes are underway.
In the March issue of the American Journal of Cardiology, a groupof investigators report the results of a study of 100 obese children,614 years old, consecutively seen at a pediatric outpatient center. Each participant had a physical exam, height and weight measurement, bloodtests, and ultrasound scans to measure intima-media thickness and diameter ofthe common carotid artery.
Analysis revealed that children who met the criteria for metabolic syndromehad significantly greater stiffness of the carotid artery and higher levels ofC-reactive protein than those without the condition. The relevance of thefindings, the authors conclude, remains to be fully elucidated.
