Sleep Duration a Risk for Diabetes
Too much or too little sleep can raise the risk of type 2 diabetes, according to a study published in DiabetesCare.
Researchers studied a group of men participating in the Massachusetts MaleAging Study who did not have diabetes during the 19871989 baselineperiod. The researchers kept track of cases of diabetes during a follow-upperiod that lasted until 2004. Participants were surveyed about their sleepinghabits, with the results grouped into hours of sleep per night
5,6, 7, 8, or >8 hours. Using 7 nightly hours of sleep as a reference point, the relative risks of different sleep patterns were calculated.
Men reporting short or long sleep duration had greater risk of developingtype 2 diabetes, according to researchers. Those who slept <5 and 6 hourswere nearly twice as likely to develop diabetes, and those who slept >8hours per night were more than three times as likely to develop diabetes, compared with men who slept 7 hours per night.
Sleep duration, the authors observe, may be a novel and underappreciatedrisk factor for type 2 diabetes.
