Americans Not Meeting ADA Clinical Practice Recommendations
Large numbers of people with type 2 diabetes are failing to meet American
Diabetes Association (ADA) clinical practice recommendation goals, according
to an analysis in Diabetes Care.
A group of researchers at MedStar Research Institute reviewed data from the
19992002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which
included 11,441 people
18 years. They identified 998 adults with
self-reported diabetes.
Records showed that only about 50% had glycated hemoblobin (A1C) levels of
7, 27% were classified as low risk for HDL cholesterol, 40% met blood pressure
recommendations, 66% had normal renal function, 38% had received a
pneumococcal vaccine, and 28% reported getting the recommended level of
physical activity.
"Achievement of ADA clinical practice recommendations is far from
adequate in U.S. adults with diabetes," the group concludes.
