Breastfeeding Reduces Childhood Overweight After Gestational Diabetes
Breastfeeding for
3 months can reduce the risk of childhood overweight
in children of mothers who had gestational diabetes, according to research
reported in Diabetes
Care.
The researchers studied 324 children of women with gestational diabetes
cared for at one clinic in Berlin, Germany, over a 5-year period. About
three-quarters of the women reported breastfeeding for <3 months, while
about half breastfed for
3 months. Overall, 28.4% of the children were
overweight. There was little difference between children who were not
breastfed and those who breastfed for <3 months. However, the proportion of
overweight dropped significantly among children who were breastfed for
3
months.
Despite the numerous healthful effects of the practice, the authors note
that overweight and obese women who have gestational diabetes tend to be less
likely to breastfeed. It may be worthwhile to encourage breastfeeding among
these patients, researchers conclude.
