Statin Therapy Safe, Effective in Elderly With Diabetes
Therapy with atorvastatin (Lipitor, Pfizer) is safe and effective in older
adults with diabetes, according to new research findings.
While previous studies showed that statin therapy is safe and effective in
younger adults, members of the Collaborative Atorvastatin Diabetes Study
(CARDS) group decided to conduct a post hoc analysis to see if that holds true
for patients 6575 years at the beginning of the study.
CARDS was a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 10 mg/day atorvastatin
for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in people with diabetes.
The study included 1,129 people aged 6575 years at the time of
randomization. Participants were followed for an average of 3.9 years.
Analysis revealed that atorvastatin therapy reduced the risk of first major
cardiovascular events by 38% in older adults, about the same effect observed
in younger adults. There also was a reduction in all-cause mortality, which
the researchers said did not reach statistical significance. The safety
profile of atorvastatin was similar in older adults and younger adults,
according to researchers.
