The Latest in High-tech and Convenient Products

Accu-Chek Spirit Insulin Pump

Figure 1

The new pump from Roche Diagnostics combines three systems: an insulin pump, an Accu-Chek blood glucose monitor, and Pocket Compass software with a bolus calculator that can be downloaded on a Palm PDA or smartphone. Via side-mounted buttons and the PDA-based bolus calculator, users can program their pump for insulin delivery without removing it from their pocket. The Spirit features a full-size (315-unit) insulin cartridge, a reversible, backlit display, and carrying case. Roche Diagnostics North America, 9115 Hague Road, P.O. Box 50457, Indianapolis, Ind. 46250-0457. 317-521-2000. www.roche-diagnostics.us

HumaPen Memoir

Figure 2

Eli Lilly's HumaPen Memoir is being marketed as the first insulin delivery device that remembers multiple doses. It is a reusable, electronic pen with a dose memory that allows the user to see the time, date, and amount of the last 16 insulin doses delivered, including priming doses. The Memoir allows dosing to be dialed one unit at a time. If too many units are entered, the dose can be corrected without wasting any insulin. Users can inject 1–60 units of Humalog insulin from a 3 ml cartridge, monitoring the cartridge through a clear insulin-viewing slot. Results can be seen on a digital display. ApneaLink

Figure 3

Sleep apnea is common in people with diabetes or obesity. The Apnea-Link with oximetry helps health care providers screen patients at risk for obstructive sleep apnea. The three-channel device can be used to analyze breathing limitations, snoring, and pulse oximetry in the patient's home or any location where the patient is sleeping. After one night's use, the patient brings the device to the physician, who downloads the results. ApneaLink then generates an easy-to-interpret report with a color-keyed risk indicator that can be used to help determine which patients need a referral to a sleep lab for diagnosis. UB-512 Blood Pressure Monitor

Figure 4

The UB-512 dual-memory wrist blood pressure monitor offers clinicians an accurate and fast way to test for high blood pressure (BP). The device measures BP at the wrist and has two time memory zones to categorize patient readings into AM or PM. Each AM or PM button stores 30 measurements for a total of 60 readings. An additional feature automatically averages the total measurements stored in memory. Unlike other monitors that measure blood pressure during deflation of the cuff, the UB-512 records blood pressure during cuff inflation for a faster, more comfortable result. The monitor also includes a pressure-rating indicator, which provides a snapshot of how patient measurements compare with standards, as well as an irregular heartbeat detector. A 4-week blood pressure logbook and carrying case are included. A&D Medical, 1555 McCandless Dr., Milpitas, Calif. 95035. 888-726-9966. www.lifesourceonline.com
