Diabetes Drugs Don't Boost Beta-Cell Function
Some studies suggest that drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes, such as
metformin or pioglitazone (Actos, Takeda), enhance the function of failing
beta-cells. Now comes a report from University of Arkansas researchers
concluding that no such effect
exists.
Investigators evaluated beta-cell function and insulin sensitivity in 50
volunteer participants with impaired glucose tolerance or a history of
gestational diabetes. After 10 weeks of maximal treatment with metformin or
pioglitazone, tests were repeated to assess beta-cell function.
Although improved beta-cell compensation was noted among participants with
the lowest insulin sensitivity, "we did not find any evidence that
either pioglitazone or metformin improved beta-cell function,"
researchers conclude.
