The Latest in High-tech and Convenient Products

Silhouette Infusion Set

Figure 1

The Silhouette 13-mm Infusion Set from Medtronic is designed to fit people with diabetes with slender body types and works in conjunction with the Minimed Paradigm insulin pump. The Silhouette is >23% shorter than existing 17-mm sets and therefore doesn't insert as deeply under the patient's skin. Once inserted, the set conforms to the user's skin and becomes flexible and nearly invisible. Both 23- and 43-inch tubing lengths are available. The Silhouette can be inserted either manually or using the Sil-serter device, and the tubing disconnects at the insertion site for ease of use. Medtronic Diabetes, 18000 Devonshire St., Northridge, Calif. 91325. 800-646-4633. www.medtronic.com

A1CNow+ Test

Figure 2

The A1CNow+ is designed to eliminate absent or delayed lab results by reporting lab-quality HbA1C values in five minutes, either directly to the patient or during the patient's office visit. The test uses a combination of micro-optical technology with a proprietary monitor to produce results, and can be performed with a simple three-step procedure using finger-stick or venous blood. Figure 5

The Glucose Advocate from Pharma Supply is a unique blood glucose monitor with voice activation and is Medicare-approved for the vision-impaired. The voice module walks the patient through the meter's operation and then reports results audibly in English or Spanish. Using a small, 0.7-ml blood sample, the Advocate will accurately report results in 7 seconds and will save up to 450 test results, averaging them over 7–90 days. Capillary action test strips are included with an insulated flip-top bottle. Pharma Supply, 3381 Fairlane Farms Rd., West Palm Beach, Fla. 33414. 866-373-2824. www.pharmasupply.com

Fifty 50 Medical Infusion Set

The new 90-degree infusion set from Fifty 50 Medical is designed to work with every insulin pump on the market. It features many state-of-the-art design elements, including a 25% lower profile than other sets and a built-in shower cap that protects the set while the user bathes. A clear-view window allows one to inspect the insertion site and see any errors directly. The set also includes a SetSaver one-step connection that allows the connector to break free from the infusion site when it's accidentally jerked or snagged, without damaging the set. And half of Fifty 50's profits go to diabetes research. Fifty 50 Medical, 1420 Valwood Pkwy., Suite 160, Carrollton, Texas 75006. 972-241-1884. www.fifty50.com

The Have a Great Trip travel kit from Accu-Chek is a unique resource for people with diabetes. A tip booklet offers suggestions on how to pack and plan for travel. It includes precautions to take when going through airport security, border crossings, or customs, as well as ways to keep diabetes in check while away from home. The kit features a doctor's declaration or medical certificate form, which lists physician contact information and approval for the user to carry diabetes supplies. The kit also contains packing lists, an emergency ID card, and a phrase book that translates key phrases for people with diabetes into French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. Online Medical Registry

Figure 8

The Online Medical Registry (OMR) from American Medical ID is a complement to engraved medical ID tags, providing more detailed medical information for emergency responders in an online profile. The OMR saves information on blood type, physician and family contacts, precise care requests, medications, and insurance. It also records food, drug, or insect allergies, immunizations, and medications. Files and images such as X-rays, EKGs, organ donor cards, and living wills can be uploaded and saved to the online profile. Using a private password, the OMR owner controls access to the file's contents. Access codes can be kept in a wallet or purse, or with a family member or physician. Additionally, users can download and carry the information on a USB device for real-time computer access at the point of care. To ensure complete access during an emergency, OMR operators will help with files on a 24/7 basis, and will fax the file to a hospital emergency department. American Medical ID, 949 Wakefield, Houston, Texas 77018. 800-490-2400. www.myomr.com

HumaPen LUXURA HD

Figure 9

The LUXURA HD pen from Eli Lilly is designed for people with diabetes who do not need large amounts of insulin. The durable, reusable pen can deliver from 1 to 30 units of Humalog insulin in half-unit increments, beginning after the first unit. It also allows for dosing to be easily adjusted either forward or backward, in the case of over-dialing, with no loss of insulin. Once LUXURA HD is prepared, users can turn the dial to the required dose. The scale can then be calculated up to 30 units in half-unit increments, after the first unit, with audible clicks. The LUXURA HD's durable cartridge holder screws on to the pen and keeps it in place. Eli Lilly and Company, Lilly Corporate Center, Indianapolis, Ind. 46285. 800-545-5979. www.lilly.com
