BIOSAFE Hemoglobin A1C Test

Figure 1

A new test from BIOSAFE for home use screens the total amount of glycated hemoglobin (A1C) in a user's blood sample and compares it with an original sample to determine progress in his or her diabetes care. Using a special lancet included in the BIOSAFE blood collection kit, a blood sample is collected and deposited onto a collection card, which is sent to the company for analysis and review by a licensed physician. Numerical results are then mailed back in an easy-to-read report. BIOSAFE Medical Technologies, Inc., 100 Field Dr., Suite 240, Lake Forest, Ill. 60045. 888-700-8378. www.ebiosafe.com

The Medi-Fridge is designed to be a completely portable refrigerating system for Byetta, Humulin and Humalog insulin, and other injectable medicines while traveling or at work. The device, which weighs <2 lbs, refrigerates up to 3 standard 10 ml insulin/injectable medicine vials, or one injection pen for diabetes. The Medi-Fridge includes a standard worldwide UL certified 110-volt power cord, and a 12-volt direct-current auto socket power cord. Medtronic Guardian

Figure 3

As an update to the Medtronic Guardian Real-Time continuous glucose monitor released last year, the new device with MiniLink Real-Time Transmitter is designed to help patients with diabetes maintain tighter glucose control. Using the transmitter, the device offers real-time trend data that alert users to potentially dangerous changes in blood glucose levels. The device is rechargeable, waterproof, and approximately one-third the size of previous Medtronic transmitters. To use, patients insert the sensor under the skin, then snap the transmitter into the glucose sensor. Glucose readings are uploaded every 5 minutes to a monitor, which displays up to 288 real-time recordings a day. The Guardian also incorporates the Medtronic CareLink Personal Therapy Management Software, which integrates data from the user's real-time system, logbook, and blood glucose meter into detailed treatment reports to identify patterns and trends in glucose management. These graphs and charts track glucose values in 3-, 6-, 12-, and 24-hour increments, and can then be shared with a physician or saved in electronic medical records. EurosRX

Figure 4

EurosRX diabetic socks are useful for anyone with diabetes who experiences circulation problems, including swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet. The constriction-free design features woven arch support, a mild ankle brace, padded sole, and a flat knit toe seam. A microfilament yarn known as SoftPrim is used to manufacture the socks and is designed to wick away moisture from the skin. The socks help maintain the body's normal temperature and are latex-free, which inhibits bacterial growth. EurosRX socks are available in crew and over-the-calf length and come in two colors and three unisex sizes. EuroSocks, 300 Centerville Rd., Warwick, R.I. 02886. 866-EUROSOCKS. www.eurosock.com

Bayer Contour

Figure 5

The new Bayer Contour blood glucose monitor is an updated version of the original Contour monitor, and is designed to minimize pain and hassle when testing. Patients using the new Contour will experience less pain because of the small sample size (0.6 µl) needed and the multiple site testing option. Accurate blood glucose test results are then displayed within 5 seconds. The Contour also stores up to 480 test results for better diabetes management. The meter offers No Coding technology, which automatically calibrates the meter with each new test strip. It features a smaller and more compact design for fast and indiscreet testing. The new Contour includes several optional features, such as meal markers with a post meal reminder alarm, and a hi/lo test result summary. A large easy-to-read display and single function buttons offer patients with limited dexterity or vision greater ease of use. Bayer HealthCare, 555 White Plains Rd., Tarrytown, N.Y. 10591. 800-348-8100. www.bayercarediabetes.com
