TALK BACK: ARE YOU PREPARED?
Two years ago, the Gulf Coast was devastated by two
hurricanesKatrina and Rita. The storms left the lives of hundreds of
thousands in disarray and showed how starkly ill-prepared most people are for
large-scale disasters. Among the hardest hit were hospitals, medical
practices, and patients who needed drugs and regular medical care to manage
chronic conditions.
In the aftermath of the hurricanes, there was hand-wringing and
pronouncements of good intentions to take steps to prevent a repeat. Katrina
was a national wake-up call, reminding us that the unthinkable can happen.
Organizations announced disaster plans. People vowed to prepare and plan
for contingencies. The medical community talked of implementing strategies to
minimize disruption the next time disaster strikes.
So are we better prepared now than we were two years ago?
Is your practice or organization ready for a Katrina-like disaster?
