People With Uncontrolled Diabetes Amenable to Inhaled Insulin
Bruce Goldfarb
The availability of an inhalable form of insulin may increase the number of
people with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes who are willing to start or intensify
insulin therapy in order to achieve improved glycemic control, according to
research presented at the annual meeting of the American Association of
Clinical Endocrinologists, held April 1115 in Seattle.
Richard M. Bergenstal, MD, executive director of the International Diabetes
Center in Minneapolis, Minn., and colleagues conducted a survey of 609 people
with type 2 diabetes who had glycated hemoglobin levels of 7.0 or more, 393
people taking two or more oral anti-diabetes agents, and 216 people taking one
or more oral agents and insulin glargine.
Researchers found that when inhaled insulin was a therapeutic option,
patients were significantly more likely to decide to include insulin in their
future treatment regimen or choose a more intensive therapy. Nearly all
participants expressed a preference for inhaled insulin when it was presented
as an option.
