Medtronic REAL-Time Pediatric CGMs

Figure 1

Medtronic recently unveiled new versions of its MiniMed Paradigm REAL-Time and the Guardian REAL-Time continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices that are specially designed for children with diabetes. These pediatric models of the adult Medtronic CGM systems are geared for children and teenagers ages 7–17. Both the MiniMed Paradigm and Guardian alert the user to a low glucose level when the sensor drops below 90 mg/dl, as opposed to 50 mg/dl in the adult devices. The devices also display real-time glucose values, trend graphs, and directional arrows, allowing users to track how diet, exercise, medication, and lifestyle affect glucose levels. Abbott Freestyle Lite

Figure 2

The Freestyle Lite from Abbott Diabetes Care seeks to streamline glucose testing for people with diabetes. The system's automatic calibration bypasses the manual coding usually required before starting new test strips. The Freestyle Lite uses a 0.3 mL blood sample to provide blood glucose results in an average 5 seconds, and can store 400 readings in memory and provide readings in 7-, 14- and 30-day averages. A high-contrast screen displays the results. The device also lets users test on alternate parts of the body, including the forearm, thigh, and palm. Users can see their averages every 14, 30, and 90 days using on-screen graphing features. WaveSense autocorrects for many common errors and distortions.
