Low-Carb vs. Low-Calorie Diets
Low-carb diets are equally as effective as low-calorie diets in helping overweight and obese adults to lose weight, decrease body fat, and lower blood pressure levels, according to a new study.
However, only patients who followed the low-carb diet showed a significant decrease in circulating insulin concentrations, the researchers found. The study was conducted by researchers at the Department of Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences, University of Guelph in Ontario.
According to the study, patients following each of the two diets showed significant weight loss over a 10-week period and “nearly identical improvements in body weight and fat mass.” Those on the low-fat diet, however, better preserved lean body mass.
